How it works

The Challenge makes Chicago more sustainable by having buildings and tenants engage in friendly competition to reduce environmental impact— and gain recognition along the way.

Here's how it works:

  • Register for the Challenge and form a team in your office
  • Tell us about your building or space, then discover ways to save
  • Earn points by completing a variety of activities
  • Step up and challenge local peers to compete and innovate
  • Gain recognition from the City of Chicago for helping improve our community

History

The Challenge began in 2008 as a collaboration between the City of Chicago and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability with core funding from Office Depot. In 2011, the 263 offices and 98 buildings participated and saved over 124 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and more than 85,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

With a new design and many enhanced features, the third generation of the Challenge is poised to make an even greater impact in 2013 and beyond.

The Green Office Challenge is a friendly competition among Chicago businesses and organizations to implement practical solutions. This a great example of Mayor Emanuel's commitment to sustainability.
